The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports the Patriots and impending free agent LG Joe Thuney have "never been close to an agreement."

28-year-old Thuney played 2020 under the franchise tag. Another tag and monster cap number isn't going to happen for an interior lineman, and Howe believes the Pats' success with drafting and developing guards will tilt them toward avoiding a long-term deal. Thuney is one of the better offensive linemen in all of football, while the Pats are currently built for the run. We wouldn't say there's a zero percent chance Thuney re-signs.
